16" x 20" poster series.

All three heavy metals posters. From left to right: Mercury, Tungsten, and Bismuth.

The chemistry department at UMBC asked students to design posters to decorate their halls- the only constraints being they had to be about the periodic table, and had to have a unifying theme.  I chose Heavy Metals, combining the worlds of cheaply printed show posters and science textbooks.

Mercury poster in its natural habitat.

I stuck with a limited color palette, using black to be the “ink” and the other would emulate the color of the chosen astrobright paper. Each piece of text had to be factually correct while emulating something you would see on a show poster: a band name, a date and time, a declarative statement, or a location. Because of this, my use of type had to be specific and intentional.
